Sleep & Temperament Guide

Understanding your child, how they respond to certain situations, the level of comfort and support they need and appreciating their strengths and areas of difficulty can go a long way to helping achieve your sleep goals.

As part of my consultancy work, when creating a bespoke sleep plan, I always analyse the temperament section of my pre-consultancy questionnaire with a fine tooth comb and ask a lot of follow up questions. This allows me to truly understand the child I’m working with and choose the best strategy for them and one that also respects their individual needs.

This guide explains the theory of child temperament, how to understand your child’s temperament and offers a range of settling methods to choose from. My hope is that it will demystify this area of sleep for you and allow you to go ahead and work on sleep with confidence.

5-12 Months Guide

  • Once you emerge from the newborn phase, it can feel like it is time for a bit of regularity in your day. If you are finding that you have reached a point where you want to work on improving night time sleep and building a nap routine for your little one then this is the perfect guide to help you do that.

When babies reach 5 months old, it is appropriate to introduce certain sleep training methods - if you want to. At The Sleep Snug, I only recommend gentle sleep training methods, there is no room for the traditional cry it out method here.

12-18 Months Guide

  • The beginning of the toddler years brings lots of transitions and development for your child. In this age group it is really common to go from 2-1 naps a day which can be tricky to manage.

If you are returnIng to work and you are worried about managing the work/life balance on little sleep, this guide can help you improve sleep to make it manageable.

This guide offers all the evidence based support you need to implement or change your routine, age appropriate settling methods and guidance around common sleep challenges and regressions.

18 Months - 4 Years

  • This guide has been created to help you understand where to start when it comes to the toddler years. I've pulled together all of the relevant materials around sleep science, age appropriate example routines, how naps work at this age, how they impact night sleep and how to get your little one to sleep. I have then presented it in a way that tells you all the bits you need to know and how to implement them.

Working on sleep with toddlers is very different to young babies. Some methods that we use with babies aren't appropriate with toddlers. By this time, habits and behaviours have been formed which can be changed over time. The difference is, post 18 months, your toddler may have an opinion about it! I have pulled together some great options for working on toddler sleep in a fun and gentle way. Bedtime doesn't have to be a battle!

FAQs

How are your guides different to the other ones out there?

It can be hard to know which sleep consultant is going to provide you with the help and support you need. My guides focus on firstly building healthy foundations, working on building a routine that is bespoke for your child and then looking at settling methods if you want to work towards changing how your child falls asleep or independent sleep. They also cover the most common sleep challenges at each age. All of my guides are based on sleep science and are referenced should you require further information on where I collated my information and advice from. It’s really important to me that parents are buying a product they can trust and can return to if they need to.

If my baby or child is between guides which one do I get?

I usually suggest going up to the next guide if your baby is between age groups. For example, if your baby is 4 months old then I would suggest getting 5-12 Months Guide as the content will be more relevant. However, if you’re not sure just pop me a message and I can advise.

What are the settling methods?

There are different gentle settling methods in each guide. Which method to use greatly depends on the age of the child which is why I have separated them out into age groups and then included methods which are most likely to be successful for that age. Rest assured, all of the methods are gentle and there are no traditional sleep training methods such as cry it out. I focus on habit layering and providing comfort and to your child and then working to reduce that level of support at your pace.

Can I gift one of your guides?

Yes, of course! Please send me a message and I can arrange this for you.
